Cyathopharynx furcifer

Cyathopharynx furcifer originates from Lake Tanganyika, Africa. They are known as the featherfin cichlid, because of their long ventral fins. The males have shining blue and yellow coloured bodies with yellow tips on their ventral fins, whereas the females are silver & without long ventral fins. It is a beauty, no wonder it is known as the king of the featherfins.

The wild caught ones can only show their colours at about a size of 10cm, but being successfully tank bred in asia, they colour up at smaller sizes. At Trop Aquarium, our furcifers has nice blue shining bodies, whether male or female. The males can grow up to 20 cm, while the females can only grow to about 13-14cm.

They like tanks with plenty of swimming space & sand.  The females usually school together, while the males create territories, by building bowers in the sand, where they attract the females into, to fertilize their eggs. They are mouthbrooders, the female will spawn & takes the unfertilized eggs into her mouth. The male will then attract the females with their yellow tips on their ventral fins, which is mistaken as eggs by the females. When the females follow closely behind the male, the males releases its sperm to fertilize the eggs. The females will swim back into the swarm and incubate the eggs for about 3 weeks, before releasing the fry.

The males often loose their blue colors if something is wrong with the water. Good filtration is essential, as they produce more waste, because of their long intestines.

These fish are peaceful, but they are best kept in cichlid tanks, with other cichlids of similar size.
