The Silver Arowana is a very popular fish that originated from the Amazon River in South America . They are huge in size and have an elongated body, hence they are not recommended for beginning aquarists. They are very beautiful and fascinating fishes to watch and therefore they are also successfully bred in Asian countries nowadays.

The males and females of Silver Arowana can only be differentiated when they have grown to mature adult Arowanas, which is when they are at least 3-4 years old. The only way that we can differentiate them would be the size of their mouths. The males would have larger mouths than the females most of the times because they are mouth breeders.

The Silver Arowanas are not hard to breed. All you would need is a large tank and a pair. The easiest way you could raise a pair would be to grow a group of Silver Arowanas together. When spawning, they would swim around in circles. The females would then lay their orange eggs, about 8-12mm, which will then be fertilized by the males. The number of eggs laid ranges from 50-250. When the young are hatched, they would stay in their parent’s mouth for over one month before they become independent and are being released at a size of 3-4cm.

The Silver Arowanas are best kept alone in an 1140 litres tank with an excellent aquarium filter.
