Food is specially prepared for the discus, consisting of ox heart, carrots, vitamins B & C, to build up its immune system, and a carotene-rich diet to further enhance the color of the discus.

The water parameters are closely monitored and controlled. The pH is maintained at 6.5 to 7.5, at a temperature of 28-32ºC and water is climatised to our customers' water condition of dH 4-5, rather than keeping it soft at dH 0-2, so that the discus can adapt easily upon arrival at our customers'. Water is changed continuously to maintain its cleanliness. Good water conditions and diet are essential for healthy and good quality discus.

Breeding of discus occurs when the adults are about 10-16months old. It is best to allow a group of young discus to select their own mates. Once a 'pair' is established, place them in their own breeding tank. Spawning usually occurs within 1 to 2 weeks. The eggs are usually laid on any substrates, such as aquatic plant, ceramic tiles, tank glass, etc. Wire mesh is used to protect the eggs from being eaten by its parents. The eggs takes about 3 days to hatch, depending on the temperature. Once successfully hatched, their parent fish take turns to take care of the fries. The fries move about by their parent fish, and are fed off the mucous secretion from the bodies of the parents, before they can freely swim. After 2 to 3 weeks of free swimming, the fries are removed to their own growout tank.

It is compatible with fishes such as cory catfish, tetras, ram cichlid, etc.
