Red Rainbow |
|
|
The red rainbow is mostly found in Lake Sentani, Irian Jaya (Indonesia). Like all rainbowfish, it has large eyes, black or silver band that runs through the middle scale rows, deeply forked mouth, and two dorsal fins, the first shorter than the second. It is an elongated, laterally compressed fish that develops an arched back with age. The males are bright red to copper in colour, while the females are silvery in colour. The colour intensifies with age. This schooling fish should be housed in a planted aquarium, but not too densely planted. They require plenty of open swimming space, as these are active fish. Frequent partial water changes may intensify colors. It is en egg layer that spawns throughout a number of days over moss. The eggs take about 7 days to hatch, and are best removed to a separate rearing tank. The young may be troublesome to rear. It is best kept with other peaceful fishes, such as barbs, guppies, platies, swordtails, danios, loaches, plecos, rasboras, tetras, corydoras, etc. |
