| Corydoras Panda | |
| Corydoras panda originated from South America,
Peru. It is an armoured
catfish, with no scales, only protected by large sheets
of bone under the skin. It has a bronze coloured body, with black patches
at its eyes, dorsal fin & caudal peduncle, that was how it got its
name, panda cory. They are one of the smaller sized corydoras
species, which can only grow up to about 5cm.
It is difficult to differentiate between the males & the females. The female appear bigger & have rounder backs as compared to the males. They can be differentiated more easily during spawning. During breeding, the male will clamp the barbels of the female during the fertilization process, using its pectoral fin. The female will carry the eggs to their final destination by using a special pouch located under her ventral fins. The eggs are then attached to a plant leaf or other smooth surface & left to hatch. The adults do not take care of its spawn & it is best to separate them from the eggs after spawning. The eggs will hatch in about 5 days' time. It is a peaceful fish and best kept in groups of six or more. They can be put together with peaceful fishes such as discus, tetras, mollies, guppies, etc. They prefer an aquarium well planted, with plenty of hiding places. A smooth sand or gravel substrate is preferred to prevent damaging their barbels. The panda cory is hardy, but more sensitive to water conditions as compared to other Corydoras Species. |
