Haplochromis Ahli
The Haplochromis Ahli, also known as Electric Blue Haplo., originates from Lake Malawi, Africa. It is an elongated fish, with vertical bars on its body, which gets less visible as it matures. If caught in the wild, the females & juveniles are normally brownish-grey in colour while the matured males are in a metallic blue colour. Now, being successfully bred in Asia, the fish is already in a bright metallic blue colour at a size of 4-5cm. It also has a white line that runs from their head to the end of their dorsal fin, with red or yellow highlights on their anal fins & tail.

These fish are mouth brooders, the female will spawn and take the unfertilized eggs into her mouth, and follow closely behind the male until he releases the sperm to fertilize the eggs. The female will incubate the eggs for about 3 weeks, before releasing the fry. It is best to remove the other fish from the tank or move the female to another tank, before she releases the brood. The female will continue to take care of the fry for about a week, before they are left on their own.

The ahlis are beautiful, but sensitive fish, especially the males. The males are aggressive & territorial fish. They do not like other cichlids of the same metallic blue colour, therefore are best kept with a number of females instead.  If kept with other fish, it is best kept in a group made up of more than 10 Haplochromis or peacock cichlids & a tank with plenty of swimming space & adequate hiding areas is preferred. They also like plants, but will destroy them.
