The Monodactylus argenteus, also known as the Mono or Sea angel, can
be found in western Africa & the Indo-Pacific. They used to be
wild-collected, but it is now successfully bred & raised at fish farms
in Asia. It is diamond-shaped with two black vertical lines at the front on
its silver body. Its dorsal fin has a yellow tip with a black outline. It is
a laterally compressed and deep-bodied fish. It
gets taller as it grows, up to a height of 25cm.
The young ones can be kept in fresh or brackish water, but as they mature they are best in a salt water environment, as they live mostly in the ocean. However, at Trop Aquarium, we convert them into a true freshwater fish, with proper climatisation and quarantine, so that they are easy to keep. The Mono is an egg layer. It spawns in the saltwater of the ocean, but the difference between the sexes and their breeding habits remains unknown. They enjoy company, therefore best to be kept in groups of 6 or more. Monos are very energetic, mildly aggressive, and have huge appetites. They can be kept with puffers, scats, archers & other monos, if kept in brackish water. If kept in freshwater, it can be kept with any less-aggressive fish, such as mollies, tetras, etc. | |
