| Copadichromis borleyi, also
known as red catango (Kadango) cichlid, originates from the Southern part
of Lake Malawi, Africa. It was previously known as Haplochromis borleyi. The males have a blue body with striking red fins,
while the smaller females remain brown or silver. Most males do not have
very red fins when they are at sizes of 5cm, they will either look like
the females or with only blue bodies, but our red catangos are
exceptional. At a small size of 4-5cm, our red catangos have a blue
face and nice red body.
These fish are mouthbrooders, the female will spawn and will take the unfertilized eggs into her mouth and follow closely behind the male until he releases the sperm to fertilize the eggs. The female will incubate the eggs for about 3 weeks, before releasing the fry. Brood sizes can range from 20 to 80 eggs. Sexual maturity is reached at about nine months of age. Copadichromis borleyi belongs to the Utaka-group which consists of relatively quiet and peaceful cichlids, these could be a bit shy inhabitants in aquariums. They suits best together with other cichlids, like the Aulonocara and Labidochromis. |
