Apistogramma Cacatuoides

Apistogramma Cacatuoides, also known as the Cockatoo Dwarf cichlid, is differentiated from the other Apistogramma species, by its high body, thick lips, "cockatoo crest liked" dorsal fin & its 2-peaked caudal fin. The males are brightly colored, while the females are neutral in color. It is one of the most colourful among the dwarf cichlids, therefore very popular.

They can be bred as a pair or a harem with several females holding small territories, created using clay pots. It is an egg layer that prefers to spawn in caves. Once you see the female turned a bright yellow color with definite black markings, it's a sign that she has laid her eggs. The female normally guards the fry, while the male defends them. Fry are normally free-swimming in about a week. This fish has been bred extensively for color and there can be available in several colour forms, example, double reds, triple reds, orange flash, blue, etc.

It should not be kept with large, aggressive fish. It is compatible with barbs, danios, plecos, rainbowfish, etc.
