| The Tilapia Buttikoferi is also
known as the Zebra Tilapia. It is an African tilapiine cichlid fish that
can be found mainly in West Africa, specifically in Liberia, but can be
commonly found all over the world nowadays. The Buttikoferi has a series
of black and yellow stripes on its body, and it is one of the most
belligerent fishes in Africa. It might be a peaceful fish at young, but it
tends to turn territorial as it grows.
The Tilapia Buttikoferi is an open-breeding substrate-spawner. The best way to breed them is to let a group of young fishes to grow up together and form pairs themselves as there is no definite way to differentiate males and females. Once a pair is formed, the rest of the fishes should be removed so the pair has more space for breeding. The pair would then excavate a large pit for spawning on the solid base, and the pair would take turns to lay eggs and fertilize them. They are very productive and a single spawning can often result in large quantities of fry. The fry grows relatively fast and they can be fed with brine shrimp once their egg sack is depleted. They are best kept with fishes that are of the similar size or other aggressive fishes like African Cichlids or African Catfish. |
